For 17 years, my parents have been our faithful travel companions, exploring countries with us and creating memories that have shaped our family story. This year, as America celebrates its 250th anniversary, we wanted to honor this milestone in a meaningful way. Instead of traveling abroad, we chose to explore the beauty of the country I now proudly call home.

And New Braunfels, Texas — with its rich German heritage, warm hospitality, and endless charm — was the perfect place to celebrate.

A Destination With Heart, Heritage, and Something for Every Age

New Braunfels welcomed us with open arms. Its blend of German roots and Texas warmth creates a destination that truly has something for everyone — active teenagers, elderly parents, and families who simply want to slow down and reconnect.
We stayed in a beautiful rental home right on the Guadalupe River, and it became the heart of our trip. The river was stunning — clear, refreshing, and full of life. Perfect for swimming, tubing, kayaking, and simply letting time slow down.
My active 17‑year‑old son loved every minute of it. My elderly parents enjoyed the peaceful views, the gentle breeze, and even the fishing opportunities right outside our door. And I cherished watching three generations enjoy the same place in their own way.

Choosing the Scenic Route: A Journey Through Texas Farmland

Instead of taking the busy I‑35 highway, we chose a scenic route that winds through Texas farmland and quiet rural towns. It added beauty, not stress, to our drive. Rolling fields, open skies, and peaceful landscapes reminded us of the simple, breathtaking charm of America — especially meaningful during this anniversary year.

​Places You Must Visit in New Braunfels

Landa Park — A Haven for All Ages

Landa Park was one of our favorite stops. Its shaded walking areas were perfect for my parents, who are not used to the Texas heat. We even saw deer resting calmly on the grounds, unafraid of people walking nearby — a magical moment.

We took the park trolley, which gave us a full tour of the swimming areas, paddle swans, the pool, and the playground. It’s a must‑do for families of all ages.

Where to Eat: Our Favorite Restaurants

The Gristmill

Is one of the most iconic dining experiences in New Braunfels — a place where history, scenery, and incredible food come together in the most unforgettable way.

The restaurant sits inside the ruins of the old Gruene Cotton Gin, which burned down in 1922. Instead of rebuilding the gin, the owners preserved the stone walls and transformed the space into a rustic, open‑air restaurant overlooking the Guadalupe River. Today, you can still see the original brickwork, iron beams, and historic architecture that give the Gristmill its signature charm. It feels like stepping into a piece of Texas history — warm, authentic, and full of character.

And the food? Absolutely delicious.

You must order the onion rings — crispy, golden, and unforgettable. They come out stacked high, perfectly seasoned, and big enough to share (though you may not want to). I loved the trout dish, especially paired with their specialty fried potatoes… gigantic, just like Texas! Every bite tasted fresh, comforting, and full of flavor.

One thing to note: where we were seated was not under air‑conditioning. The Gristmill has several open‑air sections that rely on natural breeze and fans, which adds to the rustic charm — but if you’re sensitive to heat or traveling with elderly parents, it’s helpful to request an indoor or fully shaded area when you arrive.

Still, the atmosphere, the views, and the food make this restaurant a must‑visit for anyone exploring New Braunfels.

Krause’s Café — A True Taste of German Heritage in New Braunfels

Krause’s Café is one of those places that instantly transports you — not just to another restaurant, but to another culture. Rooted deeply in New Braunfels’ German heritage, this iconic spot has been serving the community since the 1930s, originally as a traditional German beer hall. Over the years, it has been lovingly restored and expanded, keeping its old‑world charm while offering a lively, welcoming atmosphere that feels like a celebration from the moment you walk in.

The long communal tables, the Bavarian décor, the live music on weekends, and the friendly staff all make you feel like you’ve stepped into a festive gathering in Germany. It’s warm, joyful, and full of character — the kind of place where families linger, friends reconnect, and every meal feels like a special occasion.

The food… absolutely unforgettable.

You must try:

• Classic Schnitzel — perfectly breaded, crispy, and comforting
• Schweinshaxe — tender, flavorful, and melting in your mouth; truly the best dish of our entire trip

For dessert:

• Apfel Strudel — warm, flaky, and filled with spiced apples
• German Chocolate Cake — rich, decadent, and the perfect sweet ending

Every bite felt like a celebration — of heritage, flavor, and the joy of sharing a meal together.

Greene _ A Magical town you must explore

Gruene is one of those places that feels almost unreal — like stepping straight into a storybook where time slows down, charm fills every corner, and history whispers through the streets. This little historic district, founded by German settlers in the mid‑1800s, has preserved its heritage so beautifully that walking through it feels like entering a living postcard.

The moment you arrive, you’re greeted by rustic wooden storefronts, weathered brick buildings, and porches lined with rocking chairs that invite you to sit, breathe, and simply enjoy the moment. The entire town radiates warmth — not just from the Texas sun, but from the friendly shop owners, the live music drifting from nearby venues, and the gentle pace of life that makes you want to linger.

We loved strolling through the boutiques, each one filled with its own personality and treasures. You’ll find:

• Unique clothing, jewelry, and gifts you won’t find anywhere else

Every shop feels like a discovery, and every corner offers something worth pausing for.

Gruene is also home to Gruene Hall, Texas’ oldest continually operating dance hall — a place where country legends have performed and where live music still fills the evenings. Even if you don’t stay for a show, just stepping inside feels like touching a piece of Texas history.

The atmosphere is warm, nostalgic, and deeply inviting. It’s the kind of place where families reconnect, couples wander hand‑in‑hand, and travelers feel instantly at home.

Tubing at the Comal River — A Classic New Braunfels Experience

If you love water activities, tubing at the Comal River is an absolute must. The Comal is known for being one of the shortest rivers in Texas, but what it lacks in length, it makes up for in charm. Its waters are cool, clear, and incredibly refreshing — the perfect escape from the Texas summer heat.

Tubing here is lively, fun, and full of energy. You’ll float past beautiful scenery, gentle currents, and families enjoying the sunshine. There are plenty of reputable tour operators ready to help you book your tubing adventure, provide your gear, and get you safely into the water. It’s a great option for teens, adults, and anyone who loves a little adventure mixed with relaxation.

However, it’s important to know that the Comal River gets very crowded during the summer months. If you prefer a quieter, more peaceful tubing experience — especially for multigenerational families or those who enjoy a slower pace — the Guadalupe River is a wonderful alternative. The Guadalupe offers wider stretches of water, calmer pockets, and more space to spread out, making it ideal for travelers who want to enjoy nature without the hustle of large crowds.

Fischer Park — A Hidden Gem for Fishing Lovers

If your family includes someone who loves to fish — like my son — Fischer Park is a place you absolutely need to add to your New Braunfels itinerary. This park is peaceful, beautifully maintained, and designed for families who want to spend meaningful time outdoors.

The fishing ponds are spacious and well‑stocked, making it a great spot for both beginners and seasoned anglers. My son loved how easy it was to find a quiet corner along the water, cast his line, and simply enjoy the stillness of the moment. The ponds are surrounded by walking paths, shaded areas, and benches, so elderly parents can relax comfortably while the younger ones fish.

What I loved most is how Fischer Park creates an atmosphere of calm — the kind of place where conversations flow easily, kids stay entertained, and time seems to slow down. It’s perfect for families who want to connect without rushing, without noise, and without distractions.
Beyond fishing, the park also offers playgrounds, splash pads, scenic overlooks, and plenty of open space for walking or picnicking. It’s one of those places where everyone finds something to enjoy, making it ideal for multigenerational travel.
 
The Magic of the Guadalupe River

We spent countless hours enjoying the Guadalupe River — and it truly became the soul of our trip. The water is cooler than you expect in the Texas summer, refreshing in a way that makes you want to stay in it forever. As we swam, little fish surrounded us, brushing gently against our legs like tiny river companions welcoming us into their world.

I fell in love with the river’s green color — a soft, luminous shade that shifts with the sunlight. And when you lift the water in your hands, it’s so transparent you can see every ripple, every sparkle. It’s nature at its purest.

The Guadalupe is perfect for families:
·       Active teens can swim, kayak, and explore
·       Younger kids can splash safely in calmer areas
·       Elderly parents can sit by the shore, enjoy the breeze, and watch the water dance

Travel tip: Bring water shoes. The rocks can be sharp, and having them makes the experience so much more comfortable.

Refreshing time from Texas heat in summer months

Why Multigenerational Travel Matters

Traveling with family — especially across generations — is a gift. It breaks routine, creates shared experiences, and builds memories that last far beyond the trip itself. Watching my parents enjoy the river, seeing my son explore with excitement, and sharing meals, laughter, and quiet moments together reminded me why I value family so deeply.

In the evenings, we played cards under the moonlight on the terrace of our rental home. Simple moments, unforgettable memories.

Family is my priority after God. And this trip reaffirmed that truth in the most beautiful way.

I encourage every family to carve out time to reconnect this summer. If travel is possible, let it be a doorway to new memories. If not, simply being present — phones down, hearts open — is enough to strengthen the bonds that matter most.

Places We Didn’t Get to Visit — But Are Absolutely Worth Mentioning

Even though our trip was full and beautiful, New Braunfels has so much to offer that we couldn’t fit everything in. Here are a few places that deserve a spot on your list for future visits:

1. The New Braunfels Conservation Society’s Historic Village

A charming collection of restored historic buildings that showcase the city’s German heritage. It’s a wonderful place to learn, stroll, and take photos.

2. The Sophienburg Museum & Archives

If you love history, this museum is a treasure. It tells the story of German settlers who founded New Braunfels and preserves artifacts that bring their journey to life.

3. Canyon Lake

Just a short drive away, Canyon Lake offers stunning views, boat rentals, hiking trails, and peaceful picnic spots. Perfect for families who love nature and water activities.

4. The McKenna Children’s Museum

A colorful, interactive museum ideal for families with younger kids. It’s educational, fun, and a great indoor option for hot summer days.

5. Dry Comal Creek Vineyards

For adults who enjoy wine tasting, this local vineyard offers a relaxing atmosphere and delicious Texas wines — a lovely way to unwind.

6. Natural Bridge Wildlife Ranch

A drive‑through safari experience where you can see exotic animals up close. It’s perfect for families and especially fun for kids and teens.

7. Natural Bridge Caverns (Full Tour)

We didn’t get to do the full cavern tour this time, but it’s one of the most impressive cave systems in Texas. The Discovery Tour is breathtaking and very well‑organized.
